REVIEW: BLACKsummers'night

The first in a trilogy, the nine song record is a good comeback and left me wanting more.

The first track (and second single) Bad Habits has the heart throb starting exactly where he left off seven years go. He sets the mood with that falsetto we know and love so much. Pretty Wings, the lead single is one of the few standout tracks on the album. After that the songs seem to melt together, as the production becomes fairly similar at first listen.

Fistful of Tears has Maxwell swooning over a guitar break and Playing Possum details the woman in his life being emotionally distant when tough times arise. He ends the album with an upbeat instrumental entitled Phoenix Rise, that may be an indication as to his direction for the second installment, blackSUMMERS'night. All in all, it is a collection of heartfelt, sensuous tracks that you can listen to from beginning to end.

ON REPEAT: Bad Habits, Pretty Wings, Playing Possum

The Brooklyn crooner will be performing for free this Wednesday, July 8th at the CBS Early Show Studio Plaza on the corner of 59th St. and 5th Ave in NYC at noon.
